RUD’s Lone (Were)wolf
April 1, 2009
I’ve just posted Reading Until Dawn’s first essay, “Saturday’s Werewolf: Vestiges of the Premortal Romance in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Novels,” by Eric W Jepson (the W is silent). Here’s the abstract:
“Saturday’s Werewolf explores Twilight in terms of the supernatural literature of the Latter-day Saints, specifically as the series links to the premortal romance narrative mode, as exemplified in Nephi Anderson’s Added Upon (1898) and Douglas Stewart’s popular musical Saturday’s Warrior (1989).”
It’s an entertaining and insightful read. Come take a look.
And don’t be scared: RUD’s lone (were)wolf doesn’t bite. But it just might inspire you to submit.

I found this essay quite an interesting read in terms of the concept of premortal romance. As an English major in university, I consider myself a well-read person, and yet I was completely unaware of the existence of this genre, and even less so of its Mormon connection to Ms. Meyer’s predecessors with regards to her Twilight phenomenon. A refreshing, informative perspective on the vampire romance!
I was especially intrigued by the power of werewolf imprinting in both its similarities to premortal romance, and have finally gained a better understanding of where her Mormon spirituality played a role in the shaping of many of the romances of the Twilight saga. I am not a Mormon, but as a practising Christian and a research assistant, I thoroughly enjoyed reading more about something I was previously unaware of, and this online anthology will greatly assist me in providing fresh, updated resources to the English professor I am working for as she prepares her own thesis on Ms. Meyer’s global sensation.
